Hans de Castellane, painter & gallery owner
CAPE COD

Hans began his career as a mural painter, with over 150 murals to his credit. He teaches mural painting in public schools, teaches private paint lessons, and works on his own paintings at his gallery / studio located in downtown Dennisport.

Hans grew up on Cape Cod and below are colorful, stylized portraits of some of his favorite Cape landmarks, from Chatham to Provincetown. There is an emphasis in these images on architecture and light, much like Edward Hopper, who did much of his work on the Cape. His style and technique give these unique paintings a youthful energy, using heavy amounts of paint at times to build a texture and occasionally decoupaging hidden elements into the work. The show was very well received and only four original pieces from that series are currently available, but Hans has signed limited edition Framed Giclee prints as well as ceramic Tiles available of many of the works.

Stop by the studio to see what Hans is working on.

Hans has been painting his entire life. He graduated in 1999 from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn with a BFA in Graphic Design at which time he returned to the Cape and began painting murals. Hans has traveled the country for both commercial and residential projects, including murals for 2 episodes of "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" that aired in spring of 2008 on ABC. Hans also loves teaching and often leads youth projects where he oversees large scale public murals painted entirely by students of all ages, working with Cape schools and more recently with ArtsLink, a Cape based non-profit youth arts foundation. He has worked with Nauset, Chatham, Harwich and DY schools.

Hans is currently working on a series of paintings, a stylized and bold portrait of his beloved Formula 1 Auto Racing, paintings that convey the speed, glamour, history, cutting edge technology, opulence, and passion of the sport. He has envisions a piece where a red Ferrari cuts through the streets of Monaco…or 2008 champion driver Lewis Hamilton’s chrome McLaren reflecting the bright lights from the night race in Singapore. Formula One is the most capital intensive and globally popular sport in the world and will blend two of Hans’ greatest loves – racing and painting. Hans attended the inaugural Formula 1 Grand Prix in Austin Texas last year, and there are plans for one in the New York City area in 2014. Hans is excited to share these works with the American fans in New York during that event.

This is actually Hans’ favorite piece that he has ever done. de Castellane collaborated with Rowland Scherman using a large black and white print of Jim Morrison and decoupaged reproductions of Jim Morrison's drawings and poetry, photos of Jim as a child, and painted onto the print. It is signed by both de Castellane and Scherman, with Morrison’s signature decoupaged in from are production of his Will. Hans wanted to paint what Jim might be thinking when he turned his head away from the microphone, lost in ideas and the tumult of his life. This work marks Hans de Castellane’s first time collaborating with another photographer.

Hans collaborated with Roger Hoit on a painting / photography piece as part of the "Eyes of Africa" photo exhibition and AMREF fundraiser that was on display in May. The eyes of five animals for his photographs are decoupaged into this portrait of a Messai boy on the day of his circumcision ritual. Hans wanted to paint a visceral portrait of Africa, conveying the dichotomy of its beauty as well as the continent's ongoing hardships.

The following few pieces are from a series where Hans paints directly on the human form, photographs the subject, and paints into the print, creating layers within the sensual multi-media works.

This piece is a portrait of Hans' friend Lynda, who loves Frida Kahlo, and wanted a variation of her "Broken Column" painting.

Hans welcomes Russell Simmons to the Brooklyn gallery for a private fundraiser for The Diamond Empowerment Fund, building schools in Africa. Hoit's "Eyes of Africa" photography show was the backdrop for this fantastic evening.

The Brooklyn Gallery also hosted an event with Roger Hoit that raised over $32,000 for AMREF, raising money for medical research in Africa.
